1. dove, pigeon — The common pigeon or dove (Columba livia or related species), used in the NT both literally (as sacrificial birds sold in the temple, Matt 21:12, Mark 11:15, John 2:14-16; and as the pair offered by Mary, Luke 2:24) and figuratively (as the form in which the Holy Spirit descended at Jesus' baptism, Matt 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, John 1:32; and in Jesus' instruction to be 'innocent as doves,' Matt 10:16). All three clusters represent the same lexical referent in different grammatical cases: Spanish 'palomas' / 'paloma' / 'de palomas' (doves/dove/of doves), Hindi 'kabuutar' / 'kabuutaren' / 'kabuutaron ke' (pigeon/pigeons/of pigeons), Arabic 'hamaam' / 'hamaama' / 'hamaam' (doves/a dove/of doves), Korean 'bidulgi' in all forms, Swahili 'njiwa' / 'ya njiwa' (dove/of doves). The singular, plural, and genitive plural are purely inflectional variants of one meaning. 10×
