Patria, tierra natal o pueblo de origen; lugar de procedencia o conexión ancestral, aplicado tanto a ciudades terrenales como a una patria celestial.
Πατρίς (de πατήρ, padre) designa la tierra natal o el pueblo de origen, el lugar de donde proviene la familia paterna. En los evangelios sinópticos aparece casi exclusivamente en el proverbio «no hay profeta sin honra sino en su propia patria», referido al rechazo de Jesús en Nazaret (Mt 13:54-57, Mr 6:1-4, Lc 4:23-24). Juan 4:44 reitera el mismo dicho. Sin embargo, Hebreos 11:14 eleva el término a un registro trascendente: los patriarcas buscaban una «patria celestial», transformando el terrenal pueblo de origen en un destino escatológico. El español «patria» conserva perfectamente el vínculo etimológico con «padre».
