N-ANP  |  3× in 1 sense
passion, strong desire, emotion; particularly disordered or degrading lusts and affections
Originally meaning anything that happens to a person (from πάσχω, 'to suffer'), this word came to denote passions or strong emotions, particularly those that are disordered or shameful. Paul uses it for degrading passions in his discussion of idolatry's consequences (Rom 1:26), for sinful desires to be put to death (Col 3:5), and for lustful passion that marks pagan ignorance of God (1 Thess 4:5). The term doesn't merely describe strong feeling but carries a sense of being acted upon by desires, experiencing passions that can degrade and control.

Senses
1. sense 1 The multilingual evidence consistently points to strong, often negative passions: English 'passion/passions', Spanish 'pasiones/pasión', French 'passion', German 'Leidenschaften'. The lexicon traces the semantic development from 'that which happens' to 'experience' to 'passion/emotion', often negative. All three NT uses are in contexts of sinful desire: degrading passions (Rom 1:26), earthly desires to be put to death (Col 3:5), and lustful passion contrasted with holiness (1 Thess 4:5). This isn't mere emotion but disordered affection that enslaves.
