Multitud, muchedumbre, gentío — una masa de personas reunidas, especialmente las que siguen a Jesús o se congregan en público
El griego ὄχλος es la palabra de los Evangelios para las muchedumbres apremiantes, curiosas y a veces volubles que rodean a Jesús. Hereda del griego clásico un matiz ligeramente populista, incluso despectivo, donde ὄχλος podía significar «turba» en contraste con δῆμος («el pueblo»). En el Nuevo Testamento, la multitud sigue a Jesús para ser sanada (Mt 14:14), le impide el acceso (Mr 2:4) y finalmente cambia de lealtad en el juicio (Mt 27:20). Lucas y Hechos también lo emplean para reuniones urbanas generales. El francés foule y el alemán Volksmenge captan el sentido de una masa indiferenciada, distinta de una asamblea organizada.

En los Evangelios, el ὄχλος es el público popular siempre presente en torno a Jesús, atraído por milagros y enseñanzas (Mt 14:5; Mr 2:4).
