1. wine — Fermented grape juice; the standard alcoholic beverage of the ancient Mediterranean world. Used of wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:3,9-10), new wine bursting old wineskins (Matt 9:17, Mark 2:22, Luke 5:37-38), the wine mixed with gall/myrrh offered at the crucifixion (Matt 27:34, Mark 15:23), and metaphorical 'wine of God's wrath' in Revelation (14:8,10, 16:19, 17:2, 18:3). The lone dative-instrumental form ('with wine', Eph 5:18) is the same substance in a different syntactic frame.
