1. admonish, warn — To put in mind, counsel, or warn someone with corrective instruction, combining exhortation with rebuke to redirect behavior. Etymologically from nous (mind) + tithemi (place): to place something in someone's mind. Paul describes his three-year ministry in Ephesus as constant admonishing 'with tears night and day' (Acts 20:31 noutheton), and commends the Roman believers as 'able to admonish one another' (Rom 15:14 nouthetein). In the Corinthian correspondence he writes 'as beloved children I admonish you' (1 Cor 4:14 noutheton). The Colossian letters use it for the teaching ministry: 'admonishing every person and teaching every person' (Col 1:28; 3:16 nouthetountes). The Thessalonian epistles command communal pastoral care: 'admonish the disorderly' (1 Thess 5:14 noutheteite) and 'admonish him as a brother' (2 Thess 3:15). Uniformly rendered as deu 'ermahnen' (admonish), heb 'mazhir/hokhichu' (warn/rebuke), kor 'hunggye/gwonmyeon' (discipline/counsel), spa 'amonestar/amonestando'.
