N-NMS  |  1× in 1 sense
a lawgiver; one who establishes or enacts laws
James 4:12 poses a rhetorical question: 'There is only one lawgiver (νομοθέτης) and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?' The term denotes someone with the authority to establish laws. In classical Athens, νομοθέται were committees charged with revising or creating legislation. James's point is theological: God alone has the right to legislate, because he alone has the power to enforce his verdicts—to save or to destroy. Human judgment of one another usurps divine prerogative. When believers slander or condemn each other, they act as if they were lawmakers rather than fellow subjects under the one King. The reminder is sobering: we stand before the Judge, not on his bench.

Senses
1. sense 1 Refers to God as the sole legitimate source of moral law, contrasted with human presumption in judging others. The multilingual glosses preserve 'lawgiver' or 'legislator' uniformly (Spanish 'legislador', German 'Gesetzgeber'), emphasizing divine authority. The domain (Nature, Class, Example) seems misassigned—this is a role or office (leadership, authority), better suited to Social Structures or Governance.
