Relativo a la ley; como sustantivo, experto en la Ley mosaica, jurista o erudito legal en la tradición religiosa judía.
En el Nuevo Testamento, este adjetivo aparece con mayor frecuencia como sustantivo, refiriéndose a alguien versado en la Torá y su interpretación rabínica: un erudito legal profesional. Los Evangelios Sinópticos los presentan poniendo a prueba a Jesús o resistiéndose a su mensaje (Lucas 7:30; 10:25). En su único uso puramente adjetival (Tito 3:9), describe contiendas como 'legales', es decir, relativas a cuestiones de la ley y no a una persona. El término abarca tanto la función profesional del intérprete de la Torá como la cualidad descriptiva de lo perteneciente al ámbito jurídico.

2. Legal, relativo a la ley — Uso puramente adjetival: 'perteneciente o relativo a la ley'. En Tito 3:9, Pablo advierte contra 'contiendas legales' (griego: μάχας νομικάς), disputas enraizadas en litigios legalistas en vez de doctrina edificante. Este sentido descriptivo y no personal contrasta marcadamente con el uso sustantivado que predomina en el resto del Nuevo Testamento. 1×
