foolish, stupid
1. foolish, stupid Lacking sense, judgment, or wisdom; intellectually or morally dull. Used both attributively and substantively across the NT with no cross-linguistic evidence of distinct senses. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5:22) calling someone 'More!' (Fool!) brings liability to Gehenna fire, with kor 'babo' (idiot) highlighting the insult force. In the parable of the ten virgins (Matt 25:2-8) the five foolish maidens (morai) fail to prepare oil, rendered heb 'k'silot' (fools), spa 'necias', arb 'jahilat'. Jesus addresses Pharisees as 'moroi' (Matt 23:17), rendered heb 'shotim' (fools), arb 'hamqa' (stupid ones). Paul ironically calls the Corinthians 'moroi dia Christon' (fools for Christ, 1 Cor 4:10), and describes God's choosing 'the foolish things of the world' (ta mora tou kosmou, 1 Cor 1:27). The pastoral epistles warn against 'moras zeteseis' (foolish controversies, 2 Tim 2:23; Titus 3:9), rendered heb 'eviliyot/tipshiyot'. The consistent rendering across deu 'toericht', fra 'fou/insense', kor 'eoriseokeun', spa 'necio/necia' confirms a single semantic core of foolishness without genuine polysemy. 12×
