μετασχημᾰτ-ίζω G3345
V-AIA-1S  |  5× in 1 sense
To change outward form or appearance; to transform, disguise, or apply figuratively.
Focuses on alteration of external form rather than inner nature. Paul 'applied' (transferred as a figure) certain truths to himself and Apollos for the Corinthians' sake (1 Cor 4:6). Satan 'disguises himself' as an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14), and his servants likewise masquerade as servants of righteousness (2 Cor 11:13, 15). Yet the same word describes Christ's power to 'transform' believers' humble bodies into glory (Phil 3:21). Spanish captures both poles: 'apliqué' for the figurative transfer and 'se disfraza' for the deceptive masquerade.

Senses
1. sense 1 To change outward form, disguise, or apply figuratively. Covers a wide range from rhetorical figure (1 Cor 4:6, where Paul 'applied' things to himself as an illustration) to deceptive masquerade (2 Cor 11:13-15, where false apostles and Satan 'disguise' themselves) to eschatological transformation (Phil 3:21, where Christ will 'transform' our lowly bodies). The German 'sich verwandeln' and French 'se déguiser' together capture this spectrum from disguise to genuine metamorphosis.
