receive, partake of, share in; partake of food, eat
Senses
1. receive, partake of, share in — To receive a share of, partake in, or obtain something abstract -- whether an opportunity, a harvest, a spiritual quality, or a divine blessing. In Acts 24:25, Felix dismisses Paul, saying he will summon him when he has 'obtained' (metalabwn) an opportune time. In 2 Tim 2:6, the hardworking farmer must be the first 'to partake' (metalambanein) of the crops -- bridging literal and figurative. In Heb 12:10, God disciplines us so that we may 'share in' (metalabein) his holiness. In Heb 6:7, the ground that drinks in rain 'receives' (metalambanei) a blessing from God. Multilingual glosses consistently reflect abstract reception: Arabic yashtarika/tanalu, German empfangen, Hebrew leqabbel/meqabbelet ('to receive'), Hindi prapt karna ('to obtain'), Korean chamyeo/bada ('participate/receive'), Spanish participar/recibir. 4×

2. partake of food, eat — To partake of food, take nourishment, eat a meal. In Acts 27:33-34, Paul urges the shipwrecked passengers 'to take' (metalabein) food for their survival, using the verb twice in consecutive verses. In Acts 2:46, the early church 'was partaking' (metelambanon) of food with gladness in their house-to-house fellowship. The Hebrew glosses uniquely mark this as eating: le'ekhol ('to eat') and okhlu ('they ate'), distinguishing it from the more abstract 'receiving' sense. Arabic yatanawalu ('to consume/eat'), Hindi lene ('to take'), Korean meokgi ('eating'). This concrete alimentary use of metalambanw is distinct from the abstract partaking sense. 3×
