Built from meta ('change') and baino ('go'), this verb fundamentally conveys crossing from one position to another. In the Gospels it most often describes Jesus' physical movements — departing from one town to the next (Matt 11:1; 12:9; 15:29). But in two extraordinary passages it transcends the spatial: 'Whoever hears my word and believes has passed from death to life' (John 5:24), echoed in 1 John 3:14. Spanish captures the physical sense with 'partió' but uses the same 'ha pasado' for the spiritual crossing, while German 'uebergehen' (to go over) preserves the transitional force in both registers.
