Messias, the Greek transliteration of Aramaic 'Meshiha' (Hebrew 'Mashiach'), meaning 'the Anointed One'

John's double explanation ('which is, being interpreted, the Christ') shows he's writing for Greek readers unfamiliar with the Hebrew-Aramaic term.
