Mesopotamia, the region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, birthplace of Abraham
The land between the two rivers—Mesopotamia, encompassing parts of modern Iraq and Syria. Acts mentions it twice in Stephen's speech: as a region represented at Pentecost (2:9) and as Abraham's homeland before God called him to Canaan (7:2). This was ancient civilization's cradle—home to Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians. The Greek name literally means 'between rivers' (meso + potamos). For Jews, it was both the ancestral homeland and the land of exile.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 Acts 2:9 lists Mesopotamians among Pentecost's diverse crowd; Acts 7:2 locates Abraham's pre-call residence there (Ur of the Chaldeans, per Genesis). The region's importance spans biblical history from Abraham to the Babylonian exile and Persian return. All translations either transliterate Mesopotamia or translate 'between rivers.' Stephen's emphasis on God calling Abraham out of Mesopotamia stresses that the patriarch's faith preceded the promised land.
