1. be drunk, be intoxicated — To be drunk or intoxicated with wine or strong drink, used both literally and figuratively. Literal uses include the accusation that the disciples were drunk at Pentecost (Acts 2:15 methyousin), the one who is drunk at the Lord's Supper (1 Cor 11:21 methyei), those who get drunk at night (1 Thess 5:7 methyousin), the servants who eat and drink with drunkards (Matt 24:49 methyonton), the wedding custom of serving inferior wine after guests become drunk (John 2:10 methysthosin). Used figuratively of Babylon the Great 'drunk with the blood of the saints' (Rev 17:6 methyousan).
