Sustantivo derivado del verbo μάχομαι (pelear), que abarca desde el combate físico hasta las disputas verbales y la discordia interpersonal. En el Nuevo Testamento aparece exclusivamente en sentido figurado de contiendas y querellas, no de batallas militares. Santiago 4:1 pregunta memorablemente de dónde vienen estas 'guerras y peleas', señalando los deseos internos como raíz. Pablo lo emplea para describir tanto conflictos externos (2 Co 7:5) como las disputas estériles que nacen de controversias necias (2 Ti 2:23, Tit 3:9).
