flog, scourge, whip

Senses
1. flog, scourge, whip To flog, scourge, or whip someone as punishment, whether judicial or disciplinary. All NT occurrences involve the infliction of physical beating with a whip or lash. In Jesus' passion predictions, he warns that the Son of Man will be scourged (Matt 20:19; Mark 10:34; Luke 18:33). Jesus also warns his disciples that they will be flogged in synagogues (Matt 10:17) and prophesies that the religious leaders will flog those sent to them (Matt 23:34). Pilate had Jesus scourged before crucifixion (John 19:1). In Heb 12:6, the image is applied metaphorically to divine discipline: 'he scourges every son whom he receives,' but the core sense remains 'to flog/whip.' All multilingual glosses consistently confirm this: Arabic yajliduna/jalada, German geisseln, French fouetter, Hebrew yishpetu/yilqu/hilqah/malqeh, Hindi kode maarna/lagaana, Korean chaejjikjilhada, Spanish azotar. The six original clusters are purely inflectional variants (future indicative, aorist participle, aorist indicative, future indicative 2P, aorist infinitive, present indicative).
