Este sustantivo lleva la doble fuerza de «prueba» y «declaración pública». En los Evangelios aparece frecuentemente en la frase «para testimonio a ellos» (Mt 8:4; Mr 1:44), donde un acto de obediencia se convierte en evidencia viva. Jesús advierte que sus seguidores serán llevados ante gobernadores y reyes «como testimonio» (Mt 10:18; Mr 6:11). Pablo habla del evangelio del reino proclamado «como testimonio a todas las naciones» (Mt 24:14). El término también evoca el «tabernáculo del testimonio» del Antiguo Testamento (Hch 7:44), vinculándolo a las tablas del pacto.
