The activity and content of human reasoning—calculations, arguments, trains of thought. Paul uses it to describe both the accusing and defending arguments of conscience (Romans 2:15) and the lofty arguments raised against knowing God (2 Corinthians 10:5). The word carries both neutral and negative connotations: reasoning can be sound or sophistical, humble calculation or arrogant speculation. Ancient Greek used it for arithmetic, accounting, logical arguments, and the faculty of reason itself.
