A Roman weight measurement, the libra (from which we get 'pound'). Both occurrences involve extravagant gestures of devotion in John's Gospel. Mary anoints Jesus with a full pound of costly nard—a year's wages in a single act. Nicodemus brings a massive mixture of myrrh and aloes, about 75 pounds, to prepare Jesus' body for burial. The sheer quantity in each case signals devotion beyond calculation. As a silver coin in Sicily and later a standard weight, the litra was borrowed into Greek from Latin libra.
