creation, created order; institution, ordinance
1. creation, created order The act of creating or the totality of what God has made, including individual created beings. This is the dominant NT sense of ktisis, covering both the abstract act and the concrete result. In Mark 10:6 and 13:19 it refers to the beginning of creation (spa creación, hin sṛṣṭi, kor changjoe). Romans 8:19-22 personifies creation groaning in expectation (arb al-ḫalīqa, deu Schöpfung, fra créature). In 2 Cor 5:17 and Gal 6:15 it denotes the 'new creation' in Christ. Col 1:15,23 speaks of Christ as firstborn of all creation. Heb 4:13 uses it for 'creature' that is not hidden from God (spa criatura, kor pijomulli). Heb 9:11 and Rev 3:14 also employ this sense. Hebrew consistently renders בְּרִיאָה. The genitive construction 'of creation' (Mark 10:6, 13:19, 2 Pet 3:4) is merely syntactic, not a separate sense. 18×

2. institution, ordinance A human institution or established social/governmental structure, extending ktisis from divine creation to human ordering. In 1 Pet 2:13 believers are urged to submit to every human institution (πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει) for the Lord's sake. The multilingual glosses diverge from the creation sense: arb tartīb (arrangement/order), hin vyavasthā (system/arrangement), kor jedo (institution/system), spa institución. Only German Schöpfung and French création retain the creation gloss, showing translational ambiguity. This institutional sense is well attested in Hellenistic Greek where ktisis extends from 'founding' to 'established order,' distinct from the theological creation sense.
