1. acquire, obtain, possess — To acquire, obtain, gain possession of something, whether material property, citizenship, or an abstract quality. In Matt 10:9, Jesus instructs the disciples not to 'acquire' (ktesesthe) gold or silver for their money belts. In Luke 18:12, the Pharisee tithes all he 'acquires' (ktomai). In Luke 21:19, Jesus says 'by your endurance you will gain (ktesasthe) your souls.' In Acts 1:18, Judas 'acquired' (ektesato) a field with the price of his wickedness. In Acts 8:20, Simon is rebuked for thinking the gift of God can be 'acquired' (ktasthai) with money. In Acts 22:28, the tribune says he 'acquired' (ektesamen) his citizenship with a large sum. In 1 Thess 4:4, believers are to know how to 'possess' (ktasthai) their own vessel in sanctification. All multilingual glosses confirm the unified acquisition sense: Arabic iqtanaa/tamliku, French acquerir, Hebrew qanah/liqnot, Korean eotda, Spanish adquirir/ganar.
