knock (at a door)

Senses
1. knock (at a door) To knock, strike at a door seeking entry. Used consistently in the NT for knocking on a literal or metaphorical door. In the 'ask, seek, knock' teaching of Jesus (Matt 7:7-8; Luke 11:9-10), knocking represents persistent prayer and seeking access to God. In Luke 12:36, servants wait for the master who will come and knock. In Luke 13:25, those shut out begin to knock on the closed door. In Acts 12:13, 16, Peter knocks at the gate of Mary's house after his miraculous release from prison. In Rev 3:20, Christ stands at the door and knocks, the most famous metaphorical use. All multilingual glosses are uniform: Arabic iqra'u/qara'a/yatruqu, German klopft/klopfen, French frapper, Hebrew dofek/difqu/dafaq, Hindi khatkhataana, Korean dudeurida, Spanish llamar/golpear. The six original clusters merely reflect different inflectional forms (present participle dative, aorist participle genitive, present imperative, present infinitive, present participle nominative, present indicative) of this single sense.
