Κόφινος designa un tipo particular de canasta — un recipiente rígido de mimbre trenzado que las fuentes antiguas asocian específicamente con la vida cotidiana judía. Juvenal se burlaba de los judíos como gente cuyo «mobiliario es un κόφινος y un manojo de heno». En el Nuevo Testamento, las seis apariciones se refieren a las doce canastas de sobras recogidas tras la alimentación de los cinco mil (Mateo 14:20; 16:9; Marcos 6:43; 8:19; Lucas 9:17; Juan 6:13). Los evangelistas distinguen cuidadosamente κόφινος de σπυρίς (la canasta mayor de la alimentación de los cuatro mil), y el propio Jesús subraya esta distinción en Mateo 16:9-10.
