Κόρινθος es el nombre propio de la antigua ciudad griega de Corinto, estratégicamente situada en el estrecho istmo que une el Peloponeso con la Grecia continental. Célebre en la antigüedad por su comercio, riqueza y permisividad moral, se convirtió en sede de una de las fundaciones eclesiales más significativas y turbulentas del apóstol Pablo. Pablo llegó allí desde Atenas (Hechos 18:1), permaneció dieciocho meses, y posteriormente escribió al menos dos epístolas mayores a la congregación corintia (1 Corintios 1:2; 2 Corintios 1:1). El nombre se conserva con mínima adaptación fonética en las distintas lenguas: español Corinto, francés Corinthe, alemán Korinth.
