colony, Roman settlement with special legal status
Luke identifies Philippi as 'a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony' (Acts 16:12). The Latin loanword 'colonia' designated cities granted special privileges, often settled by retired Roman soldiers who retained citizenship rights. These colonies replicated Roman civic life in provincial settings. Philippi received this status after the battle in 42 BC. The designation explains the city's strong Roman character and the officials' concern about Roman citizenship in the narrative.

Senses
1. sense 1 Luke's careful geographical and political notation marks Philippi's Roman colonial status, which shaped the urban culture Paul encountered. As a colony, Philippi enjoyed immunity from certain taxes and self-governance under Roman law. The multilingual glosses transliterate or directly translate the Latin technical term. This status becomes crucial when Paul invokes his own Roman citizenship in Acts 16:37.
