κοίτ-η G2845
Bed; a place for sleeping or for sexual relations, including both marriage bed and illicit unions.
Primarily denotes a bed or sleeping place, but in the NT it extends from a literal bed where children are sleeping (Luke 11:7) to the marriage bed as a figure for sexual union (Rom 9:10; Heb 13:4) and even to sexual excess or debauchery (Rom 13:13). The range from Spanish cama (bed) to the phrase en-lechos (in beds of immorality) mirrors this breadth. The word's flexibility between innocent rest and intimate union gives it particular force in moral exhortation.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A bed or couch used for sleeping or resting, and by extension the marriage bed as a metonym for sexual relations. In Luke 11:7, it is a literal sleeping place shared with children. In Rom 9:10, Rebecca 'had a bed' (conceived) with Isaac—here koitē is a dignified euphemism for marital intercourse. Heb 13:4 declares the marriage koitē 'undefiled,' while Rom 13:13 uses the plural koitais for sexual promiscuity. French lit and Spanish cama/lecho capture the literal sense; the euphemistic sexual extension is visible in the gloss en-lechos and the English derivative 'coitus.' 4×
