Branch — a tree branch or bough; used of literal foliage and Paul's olive-tree metaphor for Israel and the Gentiles
The noun κλάδος (klados) denotes a branch or bough of a tree. Jesus uses it in the parable of the mustard seed, where birds nest in the branches of the grown plant (Matt 13:32; Mark 4:32), and in the fig-tree sign, where tender branches signal summer (Matt 24:32; Mark 13:28). Crowds cut branches to spread before Jesus at the triumphal entry (Matt 21:8). Paul develops the word theologically in Romans 11:16-21, where natural branches (Israel) are broken off and wild olive branches (Gentiles) are grafted in — a metaphor of covenant continuity and warning against presumption. Spanish 'ramas' and French 'branches' map directly.
