come down, go down, descend
1. come down, go down, descend To move from a higher place to a lower one; to descend, come down, or go down. This is the single core meaning of katerchomai across all NT occurrences, which differ only in morphological form (aorist indicative, aorist participle, aorist infinitive, present participle) and person/number rather than in semantic content. In Luke 4:31 Jesus 'went down' (aorist katelthen) to Capernaum. In Luke 9:37 the disciples 'came down' (aorist participle katelthonton) from the mountain. In Acts, the verb appears frequently for geographic movement in Palestine and the Mediterranean: Philip 'went down' to Samaria (Acts 8:5), Peter 'went down' to Lydda (Acts 9:32), Herod 'went down' from Judea to Caesarea (Acts 12:19), prophets 'came down' from Jerusalem to Antioch (Acts 11:27), Paul and Barnabas 'went down' to Seleucia (Acts 13:4), Judas and Silas 'went down' to Antioch (Acts 15:30), Silas and Timothy 'came down' from Macedonia (Acts 18:5), Paul 'went down' to greet the church (Acts 18:22), Agabus 'came down' from Judea (Acts 21:10). In the maritime context, the verb can mean 'to land/arrive at port': 'we landed at Tyre' (Acts 21:3, katelthomen) and 'we came down to Myra' (Acts 27:5, katelthomen). In Jas 3:15 false wisdom is described as not 'coming down' from above (present participle katerchomenee). All multilingual glosses confirm descent: Arabic nazala (descend), German herabkommen/herabsteigen, Hebrew yarad (go down), Hindi utarnaa (descend), Korean naeryeo-gada/naeryeo-oda (go down/come down), Spanish descender/bajar. 15×
