Senses
1. reconcile, restore to right relationship — To change from a state of enmity or estrangement to one of harmony and restored relationship; to reconcile. This is the single core theological sense of katallasso in the NT, one of Paul's most important soteriological terms, appearing exclusively in his epistles (Romans, 1-2 Corinthians). The active voice describes God as the agent of reconciliation: 'having reconciled us to himself through Christ' (2 Cor 5:18, aorist participle katallaxantos), and 'God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself' (2 Cor 5:19, present participle katallassson). The passive voice describes humans as recipients: 'we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son' (Rom 5:10, aorist passive kateellagemeen), and 'having been reconciled' (Rom 5:10, aorist passive participle katallagentes). The imperative calls for human response: 'be reconciled to God' (2 Cor 5:20, aorist passive imperative katallagete). In 1 Cor 7:11 it appears in a domestic context: a separated wife should 'be reconciled' (aorist passive imperative katallagetoo) to her husband. Multilingual glosses uniformly confirm: Arabic tasaalaha/musaalihiin (make peace/reconcile), German versoehnen, Hebrew hitratse/nirattseinu (be appeased/reconciled), Hindi mel karaanaa/milnaa (cause unity/join), Korean hwahae-hada/hwahae-shikida (reconcile), Spanish reconciliar. 6×
