condemn, pass sentence against

Senses
1. condemn, pass sentence against To pronounce a guilty verdict or pass judgment against someone; to condemn in a legal or moral sense. This single sense of katadikazo covers all NT verbal uses as inflectional variants of the same forensic-judicial meaning. In Matt 12:7 Jesus tells the Pharisees 'you have condemned' (aorist katedikasate) the guiltless -- a wrongful condemnation. In Matt 12:37 'by your words you will be condemned' (future passive katadikathesei) -- eschatological judgment by God based on speech. In Luke 6:37 Jesus commands 'do not condemn' (present imperative katadikadzete) and promises 'you will not be condemned' (aorist subjunctive passive katadikas-thete). In Jas 5:6 the rich 'condemned and killed the righteous one' (aorist katedikasate). All the multilingual glosses confirm the unified forensic sense: Arabic hakama alaa (pass judgment on), Hebrew hirsha (declare guilty/wicked), Hindi doshi Thahraanaa (declare guilty), Korean jeong-joe-hada (condemn/convict), French condamner, Spanish condenar. The noun form katadike in Acts 25:15 ('condemnation, sentence') is the nominal cognate of the same judicial concept, where the chief priests request a verdict against Paul.
