καρποφόρ-ος G2593
fruitful, fruit-bearing; productive or fertile
This adjective describes something that bears fruit or produces crops, whether literal plants or metaphorical productivity. In Acts 14:17, Paul tells the Lycaonians that God 'did not leave himself without witness, doing good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful (karpophorous) seasons.' The term describes agricultural fertility—seasons that produce harvest, not drought or famine. God's providence in nature serves as testimony to his existence and goodness even among pagans who lack special revelation. Creation's fruitfulness witnesses to the Creator's benevolent power.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Paul uses karpophoros to describe God's providential care manifest in agricultural blessing. The Spanish 'fructíferos' and French 'endurant' (enduring/fruitful) both point to productive seasons. Paul's argument is that even without Scripture, Gentiles have encountered God through nature's bounty—rain and harvest testify to a good Provider. This natural revelation leaves humanity 'without excuse' (as in Romans 1) but also demonstrates that God has always cared for all people, not abandoning Gentiles to total ignorance. 1×
