N-AFS  |  16× in 1 sense
Capernaum, a lakeside town in Galilee that served as the primary base of Jesus’ public ministry.
Kapharnaoum (from Hebrew kəfar Nachum, “village of Nahum”) was a fishing settlement on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. After leaving Nazareth, Jesus made it his adopted home (Matt 4:13) and performed many healings and teachings there, including the healing of the centurion’s servant (Matt 8:5) and the Bread of Life discourse (John 6:59). Despite these mighty works, the town drew prophetic rebuke for its unbelief (Matt 11:23). Spanish renders it Capernaúm, French Capernaüm, and German Kapernaum, each adapting the Semitic name phonetically.

Senses
1. Capernaum (place name) The proper noun designating the town of Capernaum on Galilee’s northwest shore, functioning as Jesus’ ministry headquarters during his Galilean period. It appears in all four Gospels as the site of key miracles (Mark 1:21-28, John 2:12), teachings, and the calling of disciples. The Hebrew etymology ‘village of Nahum’ is preserved across translations through phonetic transliteration rather than semantic translation, as expected for a geographic name. 16×
