κάμῑν-ος G2575
A furnace or kiln; an intense fire used for smelting or burning, often in images of divine judgment.
Refers to an oven, furnace, or kiln — a structure of extreme heat used for smelting metal or firing pottery. In the New Testament it appears exclusively in contexts of judgment and apocalyptic imagery. Jesus warns that evildoers will be thrown into the furnace of fire (Matt 13:42, 50), while Revelation describes the Lord's feet as refined bronze glowing as in a furnace (Rev 1:15) and smoke rising from a great furnace (Rev 9:2). Spanish horno and French fournaise both preserve the industrial intensity of the image.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A furnace or kiln of extreme heat, used for smelting, burning, or refining. Spanish horno ('oven, furnace'), French fournaise ('furnace'), and German Ofen ('oven, furnace') all convey intense, enclosed heat. In Matt 13:42, 50, Jesus uses it in parables of judgment — the wicked are cast into the furnace of fire. In Rev 1:15 the Son of Man's feet glow like bronze refined in a furnace, and in Rev 9:2 the abyss belches smoke like a great furnace, linking the image to eschatological devastation. 4×
