1. cover, hide, veil — To place something over or upon so as to conceal, protect, or obscure; to cover or veil. This single sense of kalupto encompasses all NT usages, which differ only in morphological form (active, passive, middle) rather than in core meaning. In Matt 8:24 the boat 'was being covered' (present passive infinitive kaluptesthai) by waves -- a literal physical covering. In Matt 10:26 Jesus says nothing is 'covered' (perfect passive participle kekalummenon) that will not be revealed -- here the covering is metaphorical concealment. In Luke 8:16 no one covers (present active kalupt-ei) a lamp with a vessel. In Luke 23:30 people cry out for mountains to 'cover' them (aorist imperative kalupsate) -- a plea for concealment from divine judgment. In 1 Pet 4:8 love 'covers' (present active kaluptei) a multitude of sins -- the well-known theological metaphor. In Jas 5:20 turning a sinner back 'will cover' (future active kalupsei) a multitude of sins. In 2 Cor 4:3-4 Paul speaks of the gospel being 'veiled' (perfect passive kekalummenon) to those who are perishing. All multilingual glosses confirm a unified semantic field: Arabic yughaTTi / masturan, German bedecken/bedeckt, Hebrew mekhussah/mekhassah (covered/to cover), Hindi dhaankna/dhakaa, Korean deop-da/gamchwo-jin, Spanish cubrir/cubierto/velado. 8×
