Fish; an aquatic creature, used literally in narratives of feeding, fishing, and post-resurrection meals.
A common noun for fish that appears across some of the most vivid scenes in the Gospels: the feeding of the five thousand with five loaves and two fish (Matt 14:17–19), the coin found in a fish's mouth (Matt 17:27), and the question of whether a father would give his child a serpent instead of a fish (Matt 7:10). In each case the word is thoroughly concrete and literal—no metaphorical or symbolic extension develops in the NT usage. The multilingual glosses are strikingly uniform: English 'fish,' Spanish 'pez/peces,' French 'poisson,' German 'Fisch.'
