Illyricum, a region along the Adriatic coast (modern Balkans)
Illyricum was a Roman province along the eastern Adriatic coast, encompassing parts of modern Albania, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. Romans 15:19 mentions it as the western extent of Paul's missionary travels: "from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel." Whether Paul actually entered Illyricum or only reached its borders is debated, but it marks the geographical scope of his work. The region represented the northwestern frontier of his mission field. Translations transliterate: "Illyricum" (English), "Illyrie" (French), "Illyrien" (German), the standard geographical designation.

Senses
1. sense 1 Paul describes his missionary scope from Jerusalem ἄχρι τοῦ Ἰλλυρικοῦ—as far as Illyricum (Rom 15:19). The region designates the Roman province along the eastern Adriatic, northwest of Macedonia—the western frontier of Paul's documented travels. Whether he actually preached in Illyricum or merely reached its borders is unclear from the text, but it defines the arc of his mission: from Jerusalem through Asia Minor and Macedonia to the Adriatic coast. Translations uniformly use the geographical name: "Illyricum," "Illyrie," "Illyrien," the northwestern boundary of his gospel proclamation.
