Illyricum, a region along the Adriatic coast (modern Balkans)
Illyricum was a Roman province along the eastern Adriatic coast, encompassing parts of modern Albania, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. Romans 15:19 mentions it as the western extent of Paul's missionary travels: "from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel." Whether Paul actually entered Illyricum or only reached its borders is debated, but it marks the geographical scope of his work. The region represented the northwestern frontier of his mission field.
