Idumea, the region south of Judea (Greek name for Edom)
Idumea is the Greek name for the region of Edom, south of Judea, derived from the Hebrew אֱדֹם (Edom). After the Babylonian exile, Edomites moved into southern Judea, and the region became known as Idumea. By the New Testament period, it was a distinct territory, sometimes under Jewish control (the Herodian family had Idumean roots). Mark 3:8 mentions people coming from Idumea to hear Jesus. The LXX typically transliterates the Hebrew as Ἐδώμ, but Hellenistic sources preferred Ἰδουμαία. Translations either transliterate ("Idumea") or use the biblical name "Edom," recognizing the geographical continuity.

Senses
1. sense 1 Mark 3:8 lists Ἰδουμαία among the regions from which crowds came to Jesus—the Hellenized name for Edom, the territory south of Judea. Historically Edom (Esau's descendants), the region was occupied by Edomites who moved north after Babylon's conquest, creating the district of Idumea. By Jesus's time, it was a recognized region, home to the Herodian dynasty's ancestors. The Greek form Ἰδουμαία appears in Hellenistic texts; LXX usually has Ἐδώμ. Translations consistently use "Idumea" (spa: "Idumaia," fra: "Idumée"), the standard geographical designation for this southern region.
