Θυάτειρα G2363
Thyatira; a city of ancient Lydia in western Asia Minor, known for its trade guilds and purple-dye industry.
A city in the Lydian region of Asia Minor, Thyatira was famous for its trade guilds and especially its purple-dye industry — the very trade practiced by Lydia, Paul's first European convert (Acts 16:14). In Revelation it is the fourth of the seven churches addressed, receiving both commendation for growing works and a sharp rebuke concerning the false prophetess 'Jezebel' (Rev 2:18-24). The name is consistently transliterated across languages: Spanish 'Tiatira,' French 'Thyatire,' German 'Thyatira.'
Senses
1. sense 1 — The proper name of a city in Lydia (modern western Turkey), referenced as the home of Lydia the purple-dye merchant (Acts 16:14) and as one of the seven churches of Revelation (Rev 1:11; 2:18, 24). Its economic significance — particularly its dye-works and trade guilds — forms the background for both the Lydia narrative and the Revelation letter's concern with economic compromise. French 'Thyatire' and Spanish 'Tiatira' are simple transliterations, reflecting the proper-noun status of this geographical designation. 4×
