θρίξ G2359
Hair; primarily human head-hair, also animal hair (camel's hair) used as clothing material.
A straightforward physical noun, θρίξ refers to hair — but in the NT it plays surprisingly rich roles. Human head-hair appears in proverbial sayings about God's sovereign care ('the very hairs of your head are numbered,' Matt 10:30; Luke 12:7) and in intimate acts of devotion when Mary wipes Jesus' feet with her hair (Luke 7:38, 44; John 11:2; 12:3). The word also describes John the Baptist's rough garment 'of camel's hair' (Matt 3:4; Mark 1:6), and in Revelation 1:14 and 9:8, hair serves as a marker of appearance and identity. Spanish distinguishes 'cabello' (human hair) from 'pelo' (animal hair), a lexical split that mirrors the two senses.
Senses
1. hair (human head) — Human head-hair, the dominant sense covering thirteen of fifteen NT occurrences. Used in Jesus' teaching on divine providence ('not a hair of your head will perish,' Luke 21:18; 'the hairs of your head are all numbered,' Matt 10:30), in narrative acts of devotion (Mary wiping Jesus' feet, Luke 7:38, 44; John 11:2), and in apocalyptic description (hair white as wool, Rev 1:14). Spanish 'cabello/cabellos' and French 'cheveu' are specific to human head-hair, confirming this as the primary referent. 13×

2. hair (animal fur/camel hair) — Animal hair, specifically camel's hair used as rough clothing material. Occurs only in the twin descriptions of John the Baptist wearing a garment of camel's hair (Matt 3:4; Mark 1:6). Spanish uses 'pelos' rather than 'cabellos' here — a natural lexical distinction between animal fur and human hair that cross-linguistically validates the sense boundary. The garment evokes the prophetic mantle of Elijah (cf. 2 Kings 1:8), connecting animal-hair clothing with prophetic identity. 2×
