V-PPA-GMP  |  5× in 1 sense
To nurse, suckle; to give suck or to suck at the breast
A verb covering both sides of the nursing relationship: the mother who gives suck and the infant who nurses. In the New Testament it appears in deeply human moments—Jesus quoting Psalm 8 about praise from nursing infants (Matt 21:16), warnings about the particular hardship of nursing mothers in times of crisis (Matt 24:19; Mark 13:17; Luke 21:23), and a woman's blessing on the breasts that nursed Jesus (Luke 11:27). Spanish distinguishes 'amamantando' (giving suck) from 'de los que maman' (those who suck), reflecting the word's ability to voice both mother and child.

Senses
1. sense 1 To suckle or nurse—said either of the mother giving milk or the infant receiving it. In Matt 21:16 Jesus cites Psalm 8:2 about praise ordained from 'nursing infants' (the child as subject); in Matt 24:19, Mark 13:17, and Luke 21:23 the eschatological warnings single out 'those who are nursing' (the mother as subject) as especially vulnerable during flight; and in Luke 11:27 a woman blesses the breasts that nursed Jesus. Spanish captures both poles: 'amamantando' (giving suck, active maternal sense) and 'de los que maman' (those who suck, infant sense), while French 'allaiter' focuses on the maternal act.
