ἦχος G2279
sound, noise, roar; a reverberating report or echo
A later form of the classical eche, this noun denotes any reverberating sound—from a rushing wind to the roar of the sea to the blast of a trumpet. At Pentecost a sound like a violent wind fills the house (Acts 2:2). Luke 21:25 speaks of the roaring of sea and waves as an apocalyptic sign. In Hebrews 12:19 it describes the terrifying sound of the trumpet at Sinai. The word can also mean 'report' or 'fame' (Luke 4:37), where the metaphor of sound spreading captures how news travels.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A sound, noise, or reverberating report—covering audible phenomena from natural roars to supernatural blasts, and by extension the 'report' or fame that spreads about someone. At Pentecost a sound like rushing wind fills the entire house (Acts 2:2). Luke 21:25 uses it for the terrifying roar of the sea in eschatological upheaval. Hebrews 12:19 describes the dreadful trumpet blast at Sinai. In Luke 4:37 the word shifts metaphorically to 'report'—news of Jesus spreading through the region. Spanish 'sonido' and French 'bruit/son' together span both the acoustic and reputational senses. 4×
