Ephraim, a place name; a town near Jerusalem where Jesus withdrew
Ephraim was a town in the wilderness near Jerusalem where Jesus withdrew with his disciples after raising Lazarus (John 11:54). The exact location is debated, but it provided a secluded refuge when the Sanhedrin actively plotted Jesus' death. The name echoes the patriarch's son and the northern Israelite tribe, but this appears to be a separate Judean town, significant only as Jesus' temporary hiding place before his final Passover.
Senses
1. sense 1 — John records (11:54) that after raising Lazarus—the miracle that sealed the authorities' determination to kill Jesus—he withdrew to this wilderness town for a period. The location provided strategic distance from Jerusalem's hostility while remaining close enough for the coming Passover journey. The name Ephraim connects to Israel's history but this town's biblical significance lies solely in providing Jesus refuge during his final weeks. 1×
