Respectable, honorable, prominent; describing persons of social standing or body parts deserving dignified treatment.
Literally 'of good form or bearing,' this adjective describes persons who are socially prominent, morally respectable, or physically presentable. Mark uses it of Joseph of Arimathea, a 'prominent' member of the council who dared to ask Pilate for Jesus' body (Mark 15:43). In Acts, it describes the influential women and men of Thessalonica and Berea who either opposed or embraced the gospel (Acts 13:50; 17:12). Paul then repurposes the word in 1 Corinthians 12:24 for the 'presentable' parts of the body that need no extra honor, contrasting them with less comely members that God has specially dignified.
