N-VMS  |  3× in 1 sense
companion, friend; form of address to an associate or comrade
This noun means comrade, companion, or friend, often used in classical Greek for fellow soldiers, messmates, or partners. In the New Testament it appears exclusively in Matthew's Gospel as a vocative term of address—Jesus speaking to individuals in parables or real encounters. Notably, while translated 'friend,' the term is more neutral than φίλος, sometimes carrying irony or distance. Jesus uses it three times, in each case addressing someone at a pivotal moment.

Senses
1. sense 1 Translations consistently use 'friend' or 'companion': Spanish Amigo, French compagnon. All three uses are vocative addresses by Jesus in Matthew. In 20:13 the master addresses a complaining worker: 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong.' In 22:12 the king confronts the improperly dressed guest: 'Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' In 26:50, most poignantly, Jesus addresses Judas at his betrayal: 'Friend, do what you came to do.' The term maintains formality even in intimate moments, sometimes with ironic undertones given the context.
