beyond, on the other side
An adverb meaning 'beyond' or 'on the far side,' used with a genitive to indicate spatial or temporal distance. Acts 7:43 quotes Amos 5:27: 'I will carry you away beyond (ἐπέκεινα) Babylon.' The term marks exile to distant lands, past the immediate boundaries. Classical usage could also refer to earlier times ('the times beyond') or the future.

Senses
1. sense 1 Stephen's speech uses this term in quoting prophetic judgment on Israel's idolatry. The multilingual evidence (Spanish 'más allá,' French 'au-delà') preserves the spatial sense of distant exile. God will send rebellious Israel beyond Babylon, to the uttermost limits, as punishment for worshiping false gods. This is not merely crossing a border but banishment to the furthest reaches, symbolizing complete removal from covenant blessing.
