ἐξαπορέω G1820
to despair utterly, be in complete perplexity; to be at a total loss, without hope or resource
This strengthened form of 'to be perplexed' intensifies to utter despair. Paul describes being so utterly burdened in Asia that he despaired even of life (2 Cor 1:8). Yet he balances this by saying they are perplexed but not driven to despair (2 Cor 4:8). The term conveys being at absolute wit's end, without any perceived way forward—though Paul maintains that God delivers even from such extremity. Classical usage included being without money or resources.

1. sense 1 — To despair utterly, be in extreme perplexity; to be at a total loss or without hope. In 2 Cor 1:8, Paul was so utterly burdened that they despaired (ἐξαπορηθῆναι) even of life—describing being pressed beyond strength. In 2 Cor 4:8, he contrasts being perplexed (ἀπορούμενοι) but not utterly despairing (ἐξαπορούμενοι)—maintaining hope despite dire circumstances. The verb intensifies simple perplexity to absolute desperation. Classical usage included being without resources. Cross-linguistic glosses preserve the despair sense: 'desesperando/desesperar', 'désespérer'. 2×
