V-ASA-3S  |  6× in 1 sense
deceive, beguile utterly
1. deceive, beguile utterly To deceive thoroughly or lead astray by deception (intensified form of apatao with the prefix ex- indicating completeness). All six NT occurrences share the same core meaning with no genuine polysemy; the auto-clusters merely reflect tense/voice variation (present imperative, aorist indicative, aorist passive participle, present indicative). Used in 1 Cor 3:18 (let no one deceive himself), 2 Thess 2:3 (let no one deceive you), Rom 7:11 (sin deceived me through the commandment), 2 Cor 11:3 (as the serpent deceived Eve), 1 Tim 2:14 (the woman having been deceived), Rom 16:18 (they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting). Cross-linguistically uniform: Arabic khadaa/yakhda (deceive), German betruegen, French tromper, Hebrew hishia/hitaah/yateh/mefattim (lead astray/seduce), Hindi dhokha dena (give deception), Korean sogida (deceive), Spanish enganar (deceive). The passive form in 1 Tim 2:14 (exapatetheisa, 'having been utterly deceived') does not constitute a separate sense but rather a grammatical voice shift.
