lead out, bring out
1. lead out, bring out To lead or bring someone out of a place, typically from confinement, bondage, or an enclosed space into freedom or open territory. All NT occurrences express this single core meaning across various inflectional forms (aorist indicative exegagen, aorist participle exagagon/exagagontes, present indicative exagei/exagousin, aorist infinitive exagagein, aorist imperative exagagetosan). The Exodus motif dominates: God 'led out' (exegagen) Israel from Egypt (Acts 7:36, 7:40, 13:17), and the new covenant echoes this when God took Israel by the hand 'to lead them out' (exagagein) of Egypt (Heb 8:9). An angel 'led out' (exegagen) the apostles from prison (Acts 5:19) and Peter from jail (Acts 12:17). Paul and Silas demand the magistrates come and 'lead them out' (exagagetosan) of prison (Acts 16:37), and the jailer 'led them out' (exagagontes) after the earthquake (Acts 16:39). Soldiers 'lead out' (exagousin) Jesus to be crucified (Mark 15:20). Jesus 'leads out' (exagei) his sheep from the fold (John 10:3). Jesus 'led out' (exegagen) the disciples to Bethany at the Ascension (Luke 24:50). Hebrew glosses consistently use hotsi/hotsi'am (hiphil of yatsa' 'bring out'); Arabic akhrajahum; Hindi nikalkar/bahar-le-jana; Korean ikkeul'eo-naeda/kkeuleo-naeda; Spanish saco/sacaron. 12×
