Senses
1. respect, revere — To show respect, reverence, or deference toward someone, especially in contexts of honoring authority figures (the parable of the vineyard tenants, Hebrews 12 on fatherly discipline). Spanish uses 'respetar/respetábamos' (respect), Arabic uses 'yastaḥyūn' (يستحيون, they show respect) and 'nahābuhum' (نَهَابُهُمْ, we revered them), Korean uses 'gonggyeong-haetda' (공경했다, respected), Hindi uses 'ādar karnā' (आदर करना, to honor), and Swahili uses '-heshimu' (respect/honor). This active sense of showing respect is semantically distinct from being put to shame. 6×

2. put to shame, make ashamed — To cause someone to feel shame or to be put to shame, used in admonishing or corrective contexts (1 Cor 4:14, 2 Thess 3:14, Titus 2:8). Spanish uses 'avergonzar' (to shame/embarrass), Arabic uses 'yakhjalā' (يخجل, to be ashamed) and 'mukhji-lan' (مُخْجِلاً, shaming), Korean uses 'bukkeureoweo-hadorok' (부끄러워하도록, so that he may be ashamed), Hindi uses 'lajjit karnā' (लज्जित करना, to shame) and 'sharmind ho' (शरमिन्द हो, be ashamed), and Swahili uses '-aibisha/-aibika' (shame/be shamed). The middle/passive voice marks this as the shame/embarrassment sense. 3×
